Things to do
Colville Farm Holidays provides you with the opportunity to "get away from it all" and relax. If you wish to participate in activities on the farm, we have a range for you to choose from, including:
- Horse trekking. Fully guided and gear provided. Treks are from 1 hour to 5 hours and cater to all levels of experience. Walk, trot or canter along the grassy flats and up the hills. View the streams meandering through the valley with Mount Moehau in the distance. Ride amongst the grazing sheep and cattle. Ride through small areas of bush with many native and introduced birds. For more experienced riders, there are longer treks to a beach on the west coast of the Coromandel Peninsula. On the way you will get spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf islands. Your guides on all treks will provide commentary on the local history, geography, flora and fauna.
- Join in the farming activities. With 2000 sheep and lambs plus 650 cattle including calves, there is always work to be done. You are welcome to observe or become involved by taking a short farm tour to do the morning chores ... At times, we need to muster the horses for a trek ; feed the orphan lambs and calves ; help the dogs shift the sheep or cattle or feed out hay to the cattle. After feeding the hens (chooks) too, take a tasty free-range egg to eat.
- Go tramping. From 1 hour to 6 hours through the bush to waterfalls, or up to the top of the range for views of the Hauraki Gulf, Coromandel Harbour or the Pacific Ocean. Maybe detour to see glow-worms in an old goldmine. The freshwater streams provide opportunities to swim, fish for eels, or perhaps find a semi-precious stone.
- If options 1, 2 or 3 seem too strenuous - relax; be lazy; listen to birdsong; unwind; sleep.
Cost of horse treks is as follows:
1 hour $40, 1.5 hours $50, 2 hours $60, 3 hours $80, 5 hours $150.
Discounts available if you are accommodated on the farm.
